The Role
Reporting to the Vice President, Finance and Operations, the Financial Controller plays a critical role in supporting the financial health and operational effectiveness of the organisation. This is a newly created position and combines strategic financial oversight with hands-on leadership of accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, budgeting, and process improvement initiatives across a global, multi-entity environment.
The ideal candidate is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and proactive, with the ability to balance day-to-day financial operations while contributing to long-term organisational growth and continuous improvement. Working closely with leadership and cross-functional teams, the Financial Controller will help strengthen financial controls, support informed decision-making, and ensure the organisation maintains strong financial stewardship and regulatory compliance.
While our organisation operates primarily on a remote basis, we maintain a small office in
Ottawa. This role supports the organisation in both a remote and in-office capacity. Although the position will predominantly be performed remotely, the successful candidate is expected to be available to attend the office as needed to support operational and organisational requirements.

Salary Range: 110,000–120,000
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Accounting Operations
- Establish, maintain, and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls across the Foundation’s multiple corporate entities.
- Provide leadership, management, coaching and development to the accounting team and key cross-functional partners.
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including transaction processing, compliance, and internal controls.
- Engage directly with other business units to support the implementation of new programs and drive efficiencies across the organisation.
- Ensure safeguarding of organisational assets and adherence to regulatory and audit requirements, including all tax filings.
- Manage relationships and processes with relevant external parties, including external accounting organisations, auditors, and relevant tax authorities.
Financial Operations
- Manage accounting oversight for operational and administrative functions globally.
- Lead the monthly close process, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Oversee accounts payable, payroll, bank reconciliations, tax filings, and balance sheet.
- integrity across all of the Foundation’s operating entities.
- Maintain and optimize the chart of accounts and financial reporting structure across entities.
- Ensure well-organized, audit-ready financial records.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare and deliver accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Support consolidated reporting across multiple entities and currencies, including intercompany eliminations.
- Contribute to annual reporting and materials for senior leadership and the Board.
- Develop KPIs, benchmarks, and performance metrics to support decision-making.
- Analyze financial results and communicate insights, trends, and variances to leadership.
- Lead or support special projects, system improvements, and process optimization initiatives.
People Leadership
- Mentor, manage and coach team members across Accounting and related operational functions.
- Cultivate a culture of empowerment, teamwork, and ongoing development.
- Address employee concerns and proactively resolve operational challenges.
Requirements
- CPA designation is desired, but not required.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including management responsibilities.
- Experience in multi-entity, multi-currency environments.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, consolidations, and internal controls.
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar).
- Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills.
- Ability to operate effectively in a global, distributed organisation.
Nice to Have
- Experience in a non-profit, membership-based, or open source organisation.
- Familiarity with international tax and compliance requirements.
- Experience with system implementations or finance transformation initiatives.
